About Us: Practice-It is written and programmed by Marty Stepp, instructor at the University of Washington, Department of Computer Science & Engineering. (Several problems are added by teaching assistants and colleagues.) Practice-It is now used by over 10,000 students at over 2,000 schools. If you are having a problem, Marty will be happy to help you. But since there are so many users, we ask that you please try other methods of help if they are more appropriate.
Programming Help: Many questions emailed to Marty are asking why the student's code does not work, or questions about how to solve a particular problem. Unfortunately, due to time considerations, Marty cannot provide 1-on-1 Java tutoring to every user of Practice-It. If you do not understand how to solve a problem or why your solution code doesn't work, please contact your TA or instructor for help. You may also want to consult your course textbook or other class resources to learn how to solve the problem, such as the supplements for the Building Java Programs textbook. If you email Marty an attachment of your code and ask him to help you find your bugs, he probably will not be able to reply to help you. Too many Practice-It emails make Marty cry. You don't want that, do you?
Bugs/Errors: Since Practice-It is still under active development and is under heavy user load, occasionally things go wrong. Sometimes things go wrong with the Practice-It system itself, such as programming errors, system crashes, or slow performance. Sometimes a problem is incorrect, such as a misleading problem description, invalid test case, or syntax error.
If you think something is wrong with the Practice-It system or with a particular problem, please email Marty Stepp. In your email, please describe the problem as well as you can, along with the problem number (if applicable), the solution code you are trying to submit (if applicable), and any error messages or output you see on the page. Marty will be happy to promptly investigate the issue.
Thank you for using Practice-It, and good luck!
